If U + V = 80 and U : V = 5 : 3, then what is the value of U - V?

Solution

Given,

U + V = 80 and U:V = 5:3

let U and V be 5x and 3x respectively.

Substituting U and V in U + V = 80,

5x + 3x = 80

8x = 80

x = 10

substituting x in 5x and 3x, we get U = 50 and V = 30.

Therefore, U - V = 50 - 30 = 20
