Forts, palaces and mausoleums of peerless grandeur came up in just a few years. Jahangir and in the early part of his reign, Shahjahan, continued to __(ii)__ Akbarabad. But now, the Emperor wanted to build a fine new city for his __{iii)__, which would bear his name and outstretch the creation of his grandfather, in both splendour and scale".

Question 49

Pick the appropriate replacement for (i)

The sentence structure "Although Babur and Humayun, __(i)__the Delhi Sultanate..., had considered Delhi to be their capital" sets up a contrast with Akbar, who moved the capital to Agra. The phrase in blank (i) must describe Babur and Humayun's relationship to the "Delhi Sultanate that ruled previously." The logical meaning is that, unlike Akbar, the first two Mughal emperors did the same thing as the previous rulers by keeping the capital in Delhi. "Following the example of" perfectly conveys this idea of emulating the previous administrative practice. The correct choice is therefore option A.

The other options are illogical: they did not take "orders" from a defunct sultanate, "implement rules as a sultanate, or "read the history" of it in this context.
