A local train having speed 36 Km/hr leaves Thane station and after 30 mins Chennai express leaves Thane station at speed of 72km/hr. What will be the time required by Chennai express to completely overtake the local train if both trains do not stop in between?
Solution
Speed of local train = 36*5/18 m/s =10 m/s
So distance covered by it in 30 mins = 10 * 30 *60 = 18000 m
Speed of Chennai express = 72*5/18 m/s =20 m/s
Since both travel in same direction, relative speed = 20 -10 = 10m/s
So, time required to overtake = distance / relative speed = 18000 /10 = 1800 sec
So C is the right choice.
