Solution

The sum of the place values of the letters within the word is divided by 2 to obtain the code.

HEAR ==> $$\frac{(8+5+1+18)}{2}$$ = $$\frac{32}{2}$$ = 16

FAIL ==> $$\frac{(6+1+9+12)}{2}$$ = $$\frac{28}{2}$$ = 14

So the code for 'FAIL' will be '14'.
