Question 36

Seventeen people are standing in straight line facing south. What is Bhavna’s position from the left end of the line?
I. Sandeep is standing second to the left of Sheetal. Only five people stand between Sheetal and the one who is standing at the extreme right end of the line. Four people stand between Sandeep and Bhavna.
II. Anita is standing fourth to the left of the Sheetal. Less than three people are standing between Bhavna and Anita.

Solution

I : There are 5 people standing between Sheetal and the one standing at extreme right. Since all are facing South, Sheetal's position from right end is 7th.

=> Sandeep's position from right end is 9th. Since, 4 people are standing between Sandeep and Bhawna

$$\therefore$$ Bhawna' position from right end can be either 4th or 14th and thus from left end will be 14th or 4th.

Thus, I alone is not sufficient.

II alone is also insufficient as there is no data about the position of the people.

I & II : Anita is standing fourth to the left of Sheetal. => Anita's position from right end is 11th.

Now, less than three people are standing between Anita and Bhawna. Thus, Bhawna's position from right end = 14th.

$$\therefore$$ Bhawna's position from left end = 4th

Thus, I & II together are sufficient.
