Solution
From the Pythagoras,
$$(AC)^2 = (AB)^2 + (BC)^2$$
$$(AC)^2 = (12)^2 + (5)^2$$
$$(AC)^2 = 169$$
AC = 13 km
Shortest distance = 13 km.
