Question 30

A clock loses 3 minutes every 2 hours. It shows the correct time at 12:00 noon on Monday. At the actual time of 6:00 PM on Wednesday, what time will the clock show?

The clock loses 3 minutes every 2 hours.

So, it loses 60 minutes every 40 hours.

or, 1 hour every 40 hours.

Now between 12:00 noon on Monday and 6:00 PM on Wednesday, number of hours = $$24+24+6=54$$ hours

So, number of hours lost in 54 hours = $$\dfrac{1}{40}\times\ 54=\dfrac{27}{20}$$ hours

Now, $$\dfrac{27}{20}$$ hours = $$1\ \dfrac{7}{20}$$ hours

Now, $$1$$ hour and $$\dfrac{7}{20}$$ hours = $$\dfrac{7}{20}\times\ 60\ =21$$ minutes

So, time which the clock will show is 6:00 PM - (1 hour + 21 minutes) = 4:39 PM
