Question 26

A fraction becomes 6/5 when 5 is added to its numerator and becomes 1/2 when 4 is added to its denominator. What will be the value of the fraction?

Solution

Let the fraction be $$\frac{x}{y}$$

When 5 is added to numerator, => $$\frac{x+5}{y}=\frac{6}{5}$$

=> $$5x+25=6y$$ ---------(i)

Similarly, => $$\frac{x}{y+4}=\frac{1}{2}$$

=> $$2x=y+4$$ ------------(ii)

Multiplying above equation by '6', => $$6y=12x-24$$

Substituting above value in equation (i), we get :

=> $$5x+25=12x-24$$

=> $$12x-5x=25+24=49$$

=> $$x=\frac{49}{7}=7$$

Substituting it in equation (ii), => $$y=2(7)-4=14-4=10$$

$$\therefore$$ Fraction = $$\frac{x}{y}=\frac{7}{10}$$

=> Ans - (B)
