Question 21

In an alloy of German silver the ratio of copper to zinc was 17 : 7 while that of nickel to
zinc was 4 : 3. The ratio of copper to zinc to nickel in the alloy was:

Solution

Lets analyze the ratios.

Copper to Zinc = 17 : 7

Nickel to Zinc = 4 : 3

Zinc is common in both and hence we make it have same value in both ratios.

We therefore get the LCM of 3 and 7

The LCM of 3 and 7 is 21

So we multiply the first ratio by 3 and the second one by 7.

Doing this we have :

Copper to Zinc = 51 : 21

Nickel to Zinc = 28 : 21

Now :

Copper to Zinc to Nickel is :

51 : 21 : 28
