Question 17

Given below is a statement is followed by two assumptions. An assumption is something supposed or taken for granted. You have to consider the statement to be true even though it may seem untrue in the real life and decide which of the assumptions is implied in the statement.

Statement: Watching TV for long hours also causes obesity.

Assumption
1: There are many causes of obesity of which watching TV is one.
2: Watching TV for short hours doesn’t cause obesity.

1- The position of the word “also” implies that watching TV (for long hours) causes many illnesses of which obesity is one. However, no information regarding obesity and its other causes is given. Hence, we cannot say that Assumption 1 is implicit.

2 - The statement clearly mentions long hours. If watching TV for short hours also caused obesity then there would have been no need to specify "long hours". Hence, Assumption 2 is implicit.
