Question 148

What is the present age of the mother?
A. Father's age is eight years more than the mother’s age. Father got married at the age of 28 years.
B. Present ageof the father is 30 years. Fouryears back the ratio of mother’s age to father’s age was 12 : 13.

Solution

We need to find the present age of the mother.

Statement A tells us that the father is 8 years older than the mother and that he got married at the age of 28. However, this does not give us any information about his age, so we cannot determine the mother's age alone. Hence, Statement A is insufficient.

From Statement B, we are given that the father is currently 30 years old. Four years ago, the ratio of the mother's age to the father's age was 12:13. This means that four years ago, if the father’s age was 26 (30 - 4), we can set up the equation 12x/13x = 24/26, where 13x = 26. Solving for x, we get x = 2. This means the mother’s age four years ago was 12 × 2 = 24. Adding four years, the mother’s present age is 28 years. Since we could find the mother’s exact age using only Statement B, Statement B alone is sufficient.

Therefore, the correct answer is if the data in statement B alone are sufficient to answer the question while the data in statement A alone are not sufficient to answer the question. (Option A)
