Question 143

4/9th of the girls and 3/7th of the boys of a primary school participated in annual sports. If the number of participating students is 302 out of which 138 are boys, what is the total number of students in the primary school ?

Solution

Let the number of boys in the school = $$x$$

number of girls = $$y$$

=> Number of boys who participated in sports = $$\frac{3}{7} x = 138$$

=> $$x = \frac{138 \times 7}{3} = 322$$

Number of girls who participated = $$\frac{4}{9} y = 302 - 138$$

=> $$\frac{4y}{9} = 164$$

=> $$y = \frac{164 \times 9}{4} = 369$$

$$\therefore$$ Total students in the school = 369 + 322 = 691
