= $$\frac{(a^2 + b^2 + 2ab) + (a^2 + b^2 - 2ab)}{a^2 + b^2}$$
= $$\frac{2a^2 + 2b^2}{a^2 + b^2}$$
= $$\frac{2 (a^2 + b^2)}{a^2 + b^2} = 2$$
