Question 106

Out of the total population, 55% were males. Out of the total number of females, 60% were literates and remaining 360 were illiterates. If 70% of the males are literates, how many males were illiterate ?

Solution

Let total population = $$100x$$

Number of males = $$\frac{55}{100} \times 100x = 55x$$

=> Females = $$100x - 55x = 45x$$

% of illiterate females = (100 - 60)% = 40%

=> Number of illiterate females = $$\frac{40}{100} \times 45x = 18x$$

Acc. to ques, => $$18x = 360$$

=> $$x = \frac{360}{18} = 20$$

% of illiterate males = (100 - 70)% = 30%

=> Number of illiterate males = $$\frac{30}{100} \times 55x = 16.5x$$

= $$16.5 \times 20 = 330$$
