Let the side of square be 10 units

=> Original area = 10*10 = 100 sq. units

Side is reduced by 50%

=> New side = $$10 - (\frac{50}{100} * 100) = 10 - 5$$

= 5 units

=> New area = 5*5 = 25 sq. units

=> % reduction in area = $$\frac{100-25}{100} * 100$$ = 75%
