JEE 12th percentage criteria 2027

JEE Main 2026 is over, and now the focus shifts to JEE Main 2027 aspirants. Whether you are appearing as a Class 12 student or taking a drop year, one major confusion remains: is the 75% rule mandatory for everyone?

The answer depends on whether you are talking about appearing for JEE Main, qualifying for JEE Advanced, or securing admission into IITs, NITs, and IIITs. In this guide, we explain the complete 75% Rule vs Top-20-Percentile criteria for JEE 2027, including category-wise relaxations, admission rules, and the key difference between eligibility for the exam and eligibility for admission.

JEE Mains 2027 Eligibility Criteria

Based on the 2026 official brochure, here is the full eligibility picture at a glance:

Criteria

What It Means

Key Note

Year of Passing

Class 12 passed in 2025/2026 or appearing in 2027

Passed before 2025 = not eligible for JEE Mains 2027

Age Limit

No age limit set by NTA

Individual institutes may have their own criteria

Attempts

Max 3 consecutive years after passing Class 12

2 sessions/year (Jan & Apr) = 6 total attempts

Mandatory Subjects

Physics + Mathematics (compulsory); plus one of Chemistry / Biology / Biotechnology / Technical Vocational

For B.Tech/B.E. programmes

Min % to Appear

None - any Class 12 pass student can register

Board marks only matter at the admission stage

Min % for NIT/IIIT/GFTI Admission

75% (Gen/OBC/EWS) or 65% (SC/ST/PwD*) - or Top 20 Percentile in board

*PwD: 65% per past norms; confirm in 2027 brochure

B.Arch / B.Plan

Minimum 50% aggregate in Class 12

PCM compulsory; separate aptitude test (AAT) for IITs

2026 Droppers: You are fully eligible for JEE Mains 2027 if you passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026. The same 75%/65% board marks rule applies - NTA has not offered any special relaxation for repeat aspirants.

Is 75% Mandatory for IIT, NIT, and IIIT Admissions?

There are two different situations here, and mixing them up is the most common mistake aspirants make:

To appear in JEE Mains 2027: No minimum percentage needed. Any student who has passed or is appearing in Class 12 can register and sit for the exam.

To secure admission at NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, or IITs: You must satisfy at least one of these two conditions at the time of JoSAA counselling:

  • Score at least 75% in Class 12 (General/OBC/EWS) or 65% (SC/ST/PwD)
  • OR be in the Top 20 Percentile of your respective board (CBSE, state boards, etc.)

NTA has not removed this rule, and based on all available indicators, it will apply in 2027 as well. Even a perfect JEE Mains rank will not secure you a seat without meeting this board marks condition.

Important: The 75% is calculated on your aggregate across all subjects in Class 12 - or the best-five subjects, depending on your board. Different boards apply different formulas, so check your specific board's method to be sure.

Prep Tip: Balancing board prep and JEE Mains together is tough but doable. The Cracku JEE Question Bank gives you topic-wise and year-wise questions that help sharpen both JEE concepts and the analytical thinking that holds up your board scores too.

JEE Mains vs JEE Advanced 2027 Eligibility Criteria

JEE Mains and JEE Advanced are two separate exams with different rules. Here is a clear comparison:

Parameter

JEE Mains 2027

JEE Advanced 2027

Conducted By

NTA (National Testing Agency)

IIT Kanpur

Min % to Appear

None - any Class 12 pass student can sit

Must clear JEE Mains + meet 75%/65% board criterion

Rank Requirement

No rank gate to appear; rank used in JoSAA counselling

Must be in top 2.5 Lakhs of JEE Mains Common Rank List

Min % for Admission

75% (Gen/OBC/EWS) or Top 20 Percentile - checked at JoSAA

75% (Gen/OBC/EWS) or Top 20 Percentile - verified by JoSAA post-Advanced

Attempts

3 consecutive years / 6 total

2 consecutive years

Target Institutes

NITs, IIITs, GFTIs + gateway to JEE Advanced

IITs only

Age Limit

None (NTA)

None (as per recent norms)

The most important difference: to qualify for JEE Advanced 2027, hosted by IIT Kanpur, you must rank within the top 2.5 Lakhs in the JEE Mains Common Rank List. That alone is a significant filter. After clearing JEE Advanced, JoSAA then re-checks your board marks before confirming your IIT seat.

Think of it this way: JEE Mains is the first gate. JEE Advanced is the second. Your board marks are the third. All three matter if IIT is the goal.

What every aspirant should know about these figures:

Top 20 Percentile is board-specific: The cutoff for CBSE will differ from UP Board or Maharashtra Board, and it changes year to year.

Aggregate calculation varies by board: Some boards count all subjects; others use the best-five. Confirm your board's method before assuming your eligibility.

PwD relaxation at 65% is based on past norms: Always confirm this in the official 2027 brochure before assuming it applies.

IIT admissions are verified post-JEE Advanced: JoSAA checks your board percentage against the 75%/65% threshold before allotting your IIT seat.

2026 droppers follow the same rules: No separate category or relaxation exists for repeat aspirants.

JEE Mains 2027 12th Percentage Criteria: Key Takeaways

You can appear in JEE Mains 2027 with any board percentage. No minimum marks required to register or sit for the exam.

75% (or 65% for SC/ST/PwD) is needed for admission to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and IITs - not for appearing in the exam.

The Top 20 Percentile route is a valid alternative to the 75% cutoff, even if your absolute score falls slightly short.

JEE Advanced 2027 (IIT Kanpur) requires a JEE Mains rank in the top 2.5 Lakhs and meeting the board marks criterion.

The aggregate is calculated on all subjects or best five, depending on your board - verify before drawing any conclusions.

All criteria here are based on 2026 norms. Check jeemain.nta.nic.in for the official 2027 brochure, expected around October/November 2026.

JEE 12th Percentage Criteria 2027: Conclusion

To appear for JEE Mains 2027, there is no minimum percentage requirement in Class 12, but securing admission to prestigious institutions like NITs and IITs requires meeting the 75% cutoff (or 65% for SC/ST/PwD candidates). If you fall short of the 75% criterion, the top 20 percentile of your respective board provides an alternative route.

For JEE Advanced 2027, you must rank within the top 2.5 lakh of JEE Mains and meet the board marks requirement. It’s essential to balance your preparation for both JEE Mains and your Class 12 board exams to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria for top engineering colleges.
