Work experience in IIM admissions has never worked as a simple yes or no filter for candidates. Anyone who has given the CAT exam knows that it has always been a scoring criterion, and IIMs award credit points based on full-time months worked after graduation. The CAT exam form always has a calculator that counts days between your first post-graduation joining date and breaks between jobs have to be subtracted from whatever total you get.
Only full-time, post-graduation employment is counted in this calculation. Internships, part-time roles and anything done before graduation had no place in this system. Apprenticeships have also been excluded entirely from the work experience tab. IIMs have verified claimed experience through Joining letter, Salary slips, Bank statements, Income tax returns, or direct HR checks with employers.

Work Experience Points Across BLACKI IIMs
To get to the point but before that one must know what BLACKI is.
BLACKI refers to the six top-ranked IIMs namely Bangalore, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Kozhikode and Indore. These institutions have kept work experience weightage somewhere between 0% and 10% in their scoring systems.
Baby IIMs and newer IIMs have generally assigned 10-20% to this criterion which has made experience far more decisive at those colleges.
IIM | Work Experience Weightage |
IIM Ahmedabad | 5 points |
IIM Bangalore | 10% |
IIM Calcutta | 8% |
IIM Lucknow | 10% |
IIM Kozhikode | 5% |
IIM Indore | 3% (For PI Shortlisting) |
IIM Mumbai | 5 points |
Work Experience Weightage in IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Calcutta
IIM Ahmedabad has used a sliding formula where candidates with fewer than 12 months receive zero points entirely.
Work Experience (Months) | Points Awarded |
< 12 | 0 |
12 - 36 | 0.2 × (Months − 11) |
> 36 | 5 |
IIM Bangalore has assigned 10% to work experience during both pre-PI shortlisting and the final composite score.
The final composite at IIM B has weighted CAT at 25%, academics at 15% combined, work experience/professional course at 10% and WAT-PI at 50% (40% for PI).
IIM Calcutta has given work experience 8% of the final selection score, structured like this:

Freshers vs Experienced Candidates in IIM Admissions
There has been no mandatory work experience requirement for CAT Exam and freshers can still get admission across the IIM spectrum.
At IIM Lucknow, freshers (students with up to 1 year of work experience) made up around 42% of the batch of 25. IIM Indore had approximately 24% of its batch with less than 1 year of work experience.
Baby IIMs have admitted classes where around 50-70% of students had no experience behind them whatsoever.
IIM Calcutta had admitted ~55% of its recent class from candidates who had less than 12 months of experience.
What Is the Ideal Work Experience for Top IIMs?
The 24-36 month range has been considered optimal for BLACKI IIMs across most recent admission cycles. This window has attracted the highest point allocations in most scoring formulas that these institutes have used. IIM Shillong awards peak marks to candidates who had 18-24 months of experience and drops scores to zero for those crossing 42 months.
IIM Nagpur has peaked at 18-24 months and returned zero points above 36 months of experience. The IIM Jammu formula has maxed out at 24-36 months and tapered off on either side of that range.
IIM | Optimal Experience Window |
IIM Ahmedabad | 24 - 36 months |
IIM Calcutta | 24 - 36 months |
IIM Bangalore | >= 36 months |
IIM Shillong | 18 - 24 months |
IIM Nagpur | 18 - 24 months |
IIM Jammu | 24 - 36 months |
IIM Ranchi | 24 - 36 months |
Six months of experience has had limited value at top IIMs, and the numbers have confirmed this clearly. IIM Calcutta has awarded just 2 points for it, while IIM Kozhikode has given 0.017 points and IIM Bangalore less than 0.5%.
The sweet spot has consistently sat between two and three years, where most formulas have assigned their highest credit to candidates.
