IIM Entrance Exams 2026
There are 100s of management institutes, but students' dreams are always set on IIMs. Why is that? All IIMs accept the CAT entrance exam, where you compete with 3 lakh candidates to secure one of 7,700 seats. If you are thinking of other alternatives to enter IIMs, there are options, such as executive MBA programs. But the IIMs' flagship 2-year MBA needs a high CAT percentile followed by sectional cut-offs. However, IIMs' average package and ROI never disappoint. That's the main reason why students look at IIMs with dreamy eyes.
What Is the IIM Entrance Exam 2026?
IIM entrance exam is nothing but a candidate filter pool. CAT is the principal route for entering the IIM admission process. The Common Admission Test (CAT) primarily assesses aspirants' logical reasoning, thinking ability, time management, decision-making, and conceptual understanding.
Yet, this is not the only exam for the IIM path. The wider IIM ecosystem follows a different admission map. Programme type, academic stage, and work experience can completely change the examination requirements.
Target programme | Entrance route | Course Duration |
Two-year MBA/ PGP | CAT | 2-Years |
Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) | IPMAT Indore, IPMAT Rohtak, JIPMAT | 5-Years |
One-year executive MBA | GMAT/ GRE | 1-Year |
IIM Bangalore Hybrid BBA | IIMB DBE Entrance Test | 3 Years |
IIM Bangalore B. Sc. | IIMB UGAT Exam | 4 Years |
IIM Kozhikode BMS | IIMK BMS Aptitude Test | 4 Years |
IIM Lucknow BS | JEE Advance | 4 Years |
IIM Mumbai BS | JEE Main | 4 Years |
IIM Sambalpur BS | IPMAT/ JEE | 4 Years |
IIM Sirmaur BMS | IPMAT | 4 years |
IIM Udaipur Online Bilingual BBA | Merit Based/ No Exam | 4 Years |
Weekend MBA | CAT/ GMAT/ GRE/ IIM-specific test | 1.5-2 Years |
Doctoral Ph.D./ Fellowship (FPM) | CAT/ GRE/ GMAT/ GATE/ JRF-UGC/ CSIR and Others | 4-5 Years |
That difference matters because an IIM is not a single programme with a single doorway.
IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX, for example, requires a valid GMAT or GRE score and at least 4 years of full-time work experience. IIM Bangalore's EPGP requires at least five years of post-graduation work experience and a valid GMAT or GRE score. CAT is not accepted for that programme.
For the flagship MBA, however, CAT remains the Primary Examination.
The 2026 cycle is particularly significant because the IIM network now includes 22 institutes, with IIM Guwahati becoming the newest addition. The flagship MBA intake for 2026-28 is approximately 7,700 seats.
Entrance Exam for IIMs
CAT is the answer for the conventional two-year IIM MBA. The wider answer depends on the programme being targeted.
CAT tests three areas:
- Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC),
- Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and
- Quantitative Ability (QA).
Your performance then feeds into an institute-specific selection process.
Entrance Exams for Admission into IIM Executive Programs
An experienced professional could have a stronger route through an executive programme.
IIM | Programme | Entrance requirement | Experience requirement |
IIM Ahmedabad | PGPX | GMAT/GRE | 4+ years |
IIM Bangalore | EPGP, UG | GMAT/GRE, IIMBUGAT | 5+ years, 12th |
IIM Bangalore | PGPEM | CAT/GMAT/GRE/IIMB Test | 4+ years |
IIM Indore | IPM | IPM Aptitude Test | After Class 12 |
IIM Ahmedabad | Flagship PGP | CAT | Not mandatory |
IIM Bangalore | Flagship PGP | CAT | Not mandatory |
IIM Bangalore's PGPEM is particularly different from the standard residential MBA. The programme is designed for working professionals and runs on weekends.
Entrance Exams for Admission into IIM PhD/ Doctoral and Fellowship Programs:
The PhD admission process across IIMs does not follow a single common entrance exam. While CAT is the most widely accepted test, most IIMs also consider scores from exams such as GMAT, GRE, GATE, UGC-NET/JRF, and CSIR-NET/JRF, depending on the research area. Some institutes additionally conduct their own tests, such as the IIMB Test, RAT, DAT, IIMSAT, or IMAT. The table below lists the major IIMs offering PhD programmes and the entrance exams accepted for admission, along with important institute-specific requirements.

IIM Eligibility Criteria 2026
The basic IIM eligibility criteria 2026 for the two-year MBA begin with a recognised bachelor's degree. Let’s check the additional requirements for entering the IIM admission process.
Eligibility factor | Flagship MBA requirement |
Qualification | Bachelor's degree or equivalent |
General category | Usually 50% |
SC/ST/PwD | Usually 45% |
Final-year degree candidates | Can apply, subject to conditions |
Work experience | Not compulsory |
Main entrance test | CAT |
The minimum academic requirement is only the starting line. It should not be confused with the profile needed for a competitive shortlist. If you are planning an executive MBA at IIMs, the picture changes to one that requires more documents.
Programme | Minimum work experience | Test |
IIM Ahmedabad PGPX | 4 years | GMAT/GRE |
IIM Bangalore EPGP | 5 years | GMAT/GRE |
IIM Bangalore PGPEM | 4 years | CAT/GMAT/GRE/IIMB Test |
- IIM Bangalore's EPGP requires a bachelor's degree with at least 50% and at least 5 years of post-degree work experience. A valid GMAT or GRE score is mandatory.
- IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX also requires a bachelor's degree, a minimum age of 25 years, four years of full-time work experience, and a valid GMAT or GRE score.
So, eligibility is not merely about marks. Your stage of education and career can determine the examination itself.
IIM Admission Process 2026 After CAT
Does a 98 or 99 percentile guarantee an IIM admission? Nope. Some candidates got 98.94%ile but were waitlisted in several IIMs.
CAT considers the application, but each IIM builds its own shortlist based on the following factors
- Academic history,
- CAT performance,
- Work experience,
- Category diversity factors, and other
- profile elements can influence the outcome.
The broad journey looks like this:
CAT 2026 → Shortlisting → Written assessment, where applicable → Personal Interview → Composite score → Waitlist Movement→ Final offer
The weight assigned to each stage can vary substantially between institutes.
Stage | What is evaluated |
CAT | Sectional and overall performance |
Shortlisting | CAT plus institute-specific profile factors |
Written assessment | Writing, reasoning, or analytical ability |
Personal interview | Communication, clarity, awareness, goals, and suitability |
Final selection | Composite score under the institute's formula |
This explains why two candidates with similar CAT percentiles can receive very different outcomes.
The post-CAT stage also becomes easier to understand when coordinated admissions are separated from individual IIM processes.
- JAP and CAP bring selected newer IIMs under common admission arrangements, while other institutes continue with their own procedures.
- But the key point is don’t miss any college under your CAT percentile.
