IIIT Admission Process 2026

If you are preparing for JEE Mains 2026 and aiming for a seat in one of the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), understanding the full admission process is your first step toward success. IIITs are among the most respected engineering institutes in India, particularly for Computer Science, IT, and Electronics branches. This guide walks you through every stage of the IIIT admission process 2026 in a simple and clear way.

How Does the IIIT Admission Process 2026 Work?

Unlike IITs, which require both JEE Mains and JEE Advanced, IIITs primarily admit students through JEE Mains scores alone. There is no separate entrance exam for IIIT admission. The entire process is centralized under JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority), which manages seat allocation for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs in one unified system.

Key Highlights of IIIT Admission 2026:

  • Admission is based on JEE Main 2026 All India Rank (AIR)
  • No separate application form is required for individual IIITs
  • All registrations and seat allotments are done through josaa.nic.in
  • There are 25 IIITs participating in JoSAA counselling 2026Β (PPP-mode IIITs)
  • After JoSAA rounds, CSAB conducts special rounds to fill any remaining vacant seats

Important: IIIT Hyderabad does not participate in JoSAA/CSAB. Candidates must apply separately via iiit.ac.in using their JEE Mains 2026 scores and follow the institute's own counselling rounds.

IIIT Admission Through JEE Mains and JoSAA Counselling

JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is the central body that handles admissions to over 120 premier engineering institutes in India, including 25 IIITs (PPP-mode). For IIIT admission specifically, only the JEE Main rank matters; you do not need to clear JEE Advanced.

The JoSAA 2026 counselling is expected to begin in early June 2026, shortly after JEE Advanced 2026 results are announced. The process runs through multiple rounds extending up to July 2026. The official schedule will be published on josaa.nic.in.

Below is the tentative schedule for JoSAA 2026 counselling (based on previous years patterns):

Eligibility Criteria for IIIT Admission 2026

Before registering for JoSAA counselling, candidates must check whether they meet the eligibility requirements for IIIT admission. The eligibility criteria are set by the Ministry of Education and apply uniformly to all centrally funded IIITs.

Table 2: Eligibility Criteria for IIIT Admission 2026

Criteria

Details

Qualifying Exam

Passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics

Minimum Marks

75% aggregate in Class 12 for General/OBC/EWS; 65% for SC/ST/PwD

Age Limit

No upper age limit for JEE Main; candidates must have passed Class 12 in 2024, 2025, or appearing in 2026

JEE Main Attempts

A valid JEE Main 2026 rank (session 1 or 2) is required

Nationality

Indian nationals/NRIs/foreign nationals apply through DASA counselling

It is important to note that meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee admission. Final seat allotment depends on your JEE Main rank, category, and the choices you fill during JoSAA counselling.

Reservation Policy: IIITs follow the Government of India reservation norms. This includes 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, 10% for EWS, and 5% horizontal reservation for PwD candidates.

Step-by-Step JoSAA Counselling Process for IIITs

The JoSAA counselling process involves several important steps. Missing any step or deadline can result in losing your allotted seat. Here is the complete step-by-step process:

  • Register on josaa.nic.in using your JEE Main 2026 roll number and password after the registration window opens in June 2026.
  • Fill and lock your choices of institutes and branches in order of preference. You can add as many choices as needed (no fixed limit) across IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
  • Seat allotment results are declared after each of the 6 rounds. Check your allotment status by logging in to the portal.
  • Once a seat is allotted, choose one of three options: Freeze (lock the seat and exit), Float (accept the seat and stay in consideration for a better option in the next round), or Slide (considered for a better branch in the same institute).
  • Pay the seat acceptance fee online: Rs. 40,000 for General/OBC-NCL/EWS candidates and Rs. 20,000 for SC/ST/PwD candidates. This amount is adjusted against the final admission fee.
  • Complete online document verification within the prescribed deadline. Required documents include JEE Main admit card and scorecard, Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets and certificates, category certificate (if applicable), and a valid photo ID.
  • If you do not get a seat in JoSAA rounds, CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) may conduct special rounds for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs to fill vacant seats. Note that IITs do not participate in CSAB rounds.
