Side-Chain Oxidation of Alkylbenzenes (Benzylic Carbon Reaction)

Rarely Tested

$$\text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{--CH}_3 \xrightarrow{1) \, \text{KMnO}_4 / \text{KOH}, \, \Delta \quad 2) \, \text{H}_3\text{O}^+} \text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{COOH} \quad (\text{Benzoic Acid})$$

$$\text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{--CH}_2\text{CH}_2\text{CH}_3 \xrightarrow{1) \, \text{KMnO}_4 / \text{KOH}, \, \Delta \quad 2) \, \text{H}_3\text{O}^+} \text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{COOH}$$

Concept: Vigorous oxidation of any alkyl side chain attached to a benzene ring oxidizes the entire chain down to a single carboxyl group ($$-\text{COOH}$$), regardless of chain length.

Notation & Key Condition:

  • Requirement: The starting compound must possess at least one benzylic hydrogen atom ($$\text{Ar--CH}_R_1R_2$$).
  • Compounds without benzylic hydrogens (e.g., tert-butylbenzene, $$\text{C}_6\text{H}_5\text{--C(CH}_3)_3$$ ) are inert and do not undergo oxidation.
