I. $$x^{2} + 2x - 8 = 0$$
II. $$y^{2} - 2 = 7$$

Solution

I : $$x^2 + 2x - 8 = 0$$

=> $$x^2 + 4x - 2x - 8 = 0$$

=> $$x (x + 4) - 2 (x + 4) = 0$$

=> $$(x + 4) (x - 2) = 0$$

=> $$x = -4 , 2$$

II : $$y^2 - 2 = 7$$

=> $$y^2 -2 - 7 = 0$$

=> $$y^2 - 9 = 0$$

=> $$(y + 3) (y - 3) = 0$$

=> $$y = -3 , 3$$

$$\therefore$$ $$x < y$$
