A pumpcan fill an empty tank in 3 hours. Because of a leakage at the bottom ofthe tank, it took half an hour extra time. The time taken (in hours) to drain all the water from the full tank by the leakage is

Solution

Let the capacity of the tank be 210 liters.
Hence, the capacity of the pump = 70 liters/hour

But because of the leak, it takes 3.5 hours.
Hence, effective filling rate of the tank with the pump and the leak = 210/3.5 = 60 liters/hour

Hence, the leak is occurring at the rate of 10 liters/hour.
Hence, time taken by the leak to drain a full tank = 210/10 = 21 hours.
