It is given that sum of a number and its reciprocal is thrice the difference of the number and its reciprocal.

a+$$\ \frac{\ 1}{a}$$ = 3(a-$$\ \frac{\ 1}{a}$$ )

2a = $$\ \frac{\ 4}{a}$$

a = $$\ \frac{\ 2}{a}$$

$$\ \ a^2=2$$

a = $$\pm \surd{2}$$
