Honduras was the first country described as a “banana republic,” a term coined by American writer O. Henry. It referred to politically unstable Central American nations whose economies were dominated by foreign fruit companies, especially the United Fruit Company. Honduras became the classic example due to its dependence on banana exports and heavy U.S. corporate influence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
