Question 63

A train is moving with a uniform speed. Train crosses a bridge of length 340 meters in 35 seconds and a bridge of length 460 meters in 38 seconds. What is the speed of the train?

Solution

Let the length of the train be T m
Time taken to cross 340 m bridge = 35 sec
Time taken to cross 460 m bridge = 38 sec
$$\dfrac{T+340}{35} = \dfrac{T+460}{38}$$

=> $$12920+38T = 35T+16100$$
=> $$3T = 3180$$
=> $$T = 1060$$
Therefore, Length of the train = 1060 m
Speed of the train = $$\dfrac{1060+340}{35} = \dfrac{1400}{35} = 40 m/sec$$
= $$40\times\dfrac{18}{5} = 144 km/hr$$
