Question 62

The heights ( in cm ) of students in a group are given below:

What is the median height of students?

Solution

First, we need to arrange the height of the students in ascending order within the table.

n = total number of students

n = 7+12+3+3+10+9+6

= 50

median of the height of students = $$\frac{\left(\frac{n}{2}\right)^{th\ term}\ +\left(\frac{n}{2}+1\right)^{th\ term}}{2}$$

= $$\frac{\left(\frac{50}{2}\right)^{th\ term}\ +\left(\frac{50}{2}+1\right)^{th\ term}}{2}$$

= $$\frac{25^{th\ term}\ +\left(25+1\right)^{th\ term}}{2}$$

= $$\frac{25^{th\ term}\ +26^{th\ term}}{2}$$

= $$\frac{153+154}{2}$$

= $$\frac{307}{2}$$

= 153.5 cm
