Addition-Fragmentation Pathway:
The reaction proceeds via a radical addition-fragmentation chain transfer mechanism. A free radical initiator attacks the activated, electron-deficient chloroalkene double bond ($$-\text{C}(\text{Cl})=\text{CH}_2$$), creating a stable intermediate radical species.
Elimination of Chlorine:
Instead of typical linear addition, the intermediate eliminates a chlorine radical ($$\text{Cl}^\bullet$$) to restore the double bond configuration or assist in building the polymeric chain. The expelled chlorine radical combines with available hydrogen sources to form the structure-stabilized $$\text{HCl}$$ byproduct.
