Question 58

If the mean of two numbers is 12, and the difference between the two numbers is 6, find the two numbers.

Solution

Let's assume the two numbers are 'y' and 'z'.

If the mean of two numbers is 12.

$$\frac{y+z}{2}\ =\ 12$$

y+z = 24    Eq.(i)

the difference between the two numbers is 6.

y-z = 6    Eq.(ii)

Add Eq.(i) and Eq.(ii).

y+z+y-z = 24+6

2y = 30

y = 15

Put the value of 'y' in Eq.(i).

15+z = 24

z = 24-15

z = 9

So the two numbers are '15' and '9'.
