A piece of wire 78 cm long is bent in the form of an isosceles triangle. If the ratio of one of the equal sides to the base 5 : 3, then what is the length of the base?
Solution
Let us assume the length of the sides of the isosceles triangle be 5x, 5x and 3x cm.
The perimeter of the triangle = 78 cm
==> 5x + 5x + 3x = 13x = 78 cm.
This gives x = 6 cm and length of the base i.e. 3x to be 18 cm.
