Question 54

An organic compound neither reacts with neutral ferric chloride solution nor with Fehling solution. It however, reacts with Grignard reagent and gives positive iodoform test. The compound is:

  • Ferric Chloride (FeCl3) Test: A negative result means the compound is not a phenol
  • Fehling Solution Test: A negative result means the compound is not an aliphatic aldehyde (like acetaldehyde). Since it doesn't reduce Fehling's solution, it is likely a ketone.

Reacts with Grignard reagent

  • This confirms the presence of a carbonyl group . Grignard reagents perform nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon of ketones to form alcohols.

Positive Iodoform test

  • This is the most specific clue. For a compound to give a positive iodoform test, it must contain a methyl ketone group or a methyl carbinol group
