A train leaves P at 9 am with speed of 30 km/h. Another train leaves Q at 11 am with speed of 45 km/h. The trains are traveling towards each other on parallel tracks. The distance between P and Q is 300 km. When they meet, what is the ratio of the distances covered by them?
A train leaves P at 9 am with speed of 30 km/h. Another train leaves Q at 11 am with speed of 45 km/h.
The distance between P and Q is 300 km.
So the first train can alone cover 60 km (from 9 am to 11 am).
Now the distance between both the trains at 11 am = 300-60 = 240 km.
The ratio of the speeds of the first and second trains is 30:45 respectively. So finally the ratio is 2:3.
Now remaining 240 km can be covered by both the trains in a ratio of 2:3.
So the distance covered by the first train after 11 am = 240 of (2/5) = 96 km
So the distance covered by the second train after 11 am = 240 of (3/5) = 144 km
the ratio of the distances covered by them = (60+96) : 144
= 156 : 144
= 13:12
