Sum and difference of the ages of two children are 33 and 3 respectively. What is the age of the elder child?
Solution
let the ages of 2 children be x,y
sum of their ages = 33
x + y = 33.............(1)
difference of their ages = 3
x - y = 3.............(2)
solving (1) and (2)
x = 18
substitute x= 18 in (1)
18 + y = 33
y = 15
thus age of elder child = 18
