Question 46

A rightcircular solid cone of radius 3.2 cm and height 7.2 cm is melted and recastinto a right circular cylinder of height 9.6 cm. What is the diameter of the base of the cylinder?

Solution

Volume of cone = $$\frac{1}{3} \pi r^2 h $$
Volume of cylinder = $$ \pi r^2 h $$
Volume of cone = volume of cylinder
$$\frac{1}{3} \pi (3.2)^2 \times 7.2 = \pi r^2 \times 9.6$$
$$10.24 \times 2.4 = r^2 \times 9.6$$
$$r^2 = 10.24/4 = 2.56$$
r = 1.6 cm
Diameter = 1.6 $$\times$$ 2 = 3.2 cmm
