We have, $$x^2 - y^2 = 2y + 1$$

=> $$x^2 = y^2 + 2y + 1$$

=> $$x^2 - (y+1)^2 $$=0

=> (x-y-1)(x+y+1)=0

Here we have a pair of straight lines: x-y-1=0 and x+y+1=0.
