A man bought goods worth Rs. 10,000 and sold half of them at a gain of 10%. At what gain percent must he sell the reminder so as to get a gain of 25% on the whole?
He divided the goods in 2 parts each having a CP of 5000.
SP of 1st part with a gain of 10% = 1.1*5000 = 5500.
Overall SP to gain 25% on the whole = 1.25*10000 = 12500.
SP of the 2nd part = 12500 - 5500 = 7000.
The gain he must have on the 2nd part = $$\frac{7000-5000}{5000}\times\ 1000=40\%$$.
