Question 30

If $$x^2 + kx + k = 0$$ has no solution, then the value of k will satisfy:

Solution

Discriminant = b^2 - 4ac

for this equation

discriminant = $$k^2 - 4(1)(k) = k^2 - 4k$$

for no real roots, discriminant < 0

$$k^2 - 4k < 0$$

$$k^2 - 4k < 0$$

k(k-4)<0

k < 0 and k < 4

the answer is 0 > k < 4
