Question 30

Energy is emitted when electron jumps from higher energy level to lower energy. In which transition the wave length emitted is minimum

Solution

The wavelength is least when the energy emitted is greatest. The energy gap is proportional to $$\frac{1}{n_1^2} - \frac{1}{n_2^2}$$, which is $$\frac{3}{4}$$ for $$2 \rightarrow 1$$, much larger than for the other jumps ($$\frac{5}{36}$$, $$\frac{7}{144}$$, $$\frac{9}{400}$$). So the $$2 \rightarrow 1$$ transition gives the minimum wavelength.
