Question 20

The ratio of sand to gravel in a mixture is 17 : 9 while that between gravel and cement is 6 : 17. What is the ratio of sand to cement in the mixture?

Solution

The ratio of sand to gravel in a mixture is 17 : 9 while that between gravel and cement is 6 : 17.

$$\frac{Sand}{Gravel}=\frac{17}{9}$$

$$\frac{Gravel}{Cement}=\frac{6}{17}$$

To equate all the ratios we have to make gravel equal by multiplying both the ratios with 2 and 3 respectively.

Sand : Gravel : Cement :: 34 : 18 : 51

So Sand : Cement :: 34 : 51 = 2 : 3

Option D is correct.
