Question 198

Three men or eight boys can du a piece of work in 17 days. How many days will two men and six boys together take to finish the same work ?

Solution

Given that , 3 men(M) or 8 boys(B) can do the work in 17 days i.e the capacity of 3 men and 8 boys is same.
Hence, 3M = 8B , which gives , M = $$\frac{8}{3}$$*B

We need to find , the time taken by 2M + 6B . Replacing M with $$\frac{8}{3}$$*B

we get 2*$$\frac{8}{3}$$*B + 6B = $$\frac{34}{3}$$*B.
But as 8 boys can do the job in 17days , $$\frac{34}{3}$$ boys can do the same job in (18*7)$$\frac{34}{3}$$

= 12 days.
