The ages of A and B are in the ratio 2 : 5. Eight years later, the ratio of their ages will be 22 : 43. Their present ages are (in years) :

Solution

Let the current ages of A and B be 2x and 5x.

Eight years later, the ratio of their ages will be 22 : 43

$$\Rightarrow$$  $$\frac{2x+8}{5x+8}=\frac{22}{43}$$

$$\Rightarrow$$  86x + 344 = 110x + 176

$$\Rightarrow$$  24x = 168

$$\Rightarrow$$  x = 7

$$\therefore\ $$Present ages of A and B are 14 and 35 respectively.
