Question 19

A train crosses a 550 m long platform in 36 seconds. How long was the train if it was travelling at the speed of 70 km/h?

Solution

Given, Length of platform = 550 m
Let the length of the train be L m
Distance travelled by the train to cross the platform = 550+L m
Given, Time taken to cross the platform = 36 seconds
Speed of the train = 70 km/hr = $$\dfrac{175}{9}$$ m/sec
Then, $$\dfrac{550+L}{36} = \dfrac{175}{9}$$
=> 550+L = 700 => L = 150
Therefore, Length of the train = 150 m
