Instructions

The English alphabet is divided into five groups. Each group starts with the vowel and the consonants immediately following that vowel and the consonants immediately following that vowel are included in that group. Thus, the letters A, B, C, D will be in the first group, the letters E, F, G, H will be in the second group and so on. The value of the first group is fixed as 10 and so on. The value of the last group is fixed as 50. In a group, the value of each letter will be the value of that group. To calculate the value of a word, you should give the same value of each of the letters as the value of the group to which a particular letter belongs and then add all the letters of the word: If all the letters in the word belong to one group only, then the value of that word will be equal to the product of the number of letters in the word and the value of the group to which the letters belong. However, if the letters of the words belong to different groups, then first write the value of that letter and the some value is given to all others letters in the word belonging to that group to which the first letter belongs. But for other letters, give double the value equivalent to the value of the group to which they belong.</p>

For Example : The value of word ‘CAB’ will be equal to 10 + 10 + 10 = 30, because all the three letters (the first letter and the remaining two) belong to the first group and so the value of each letter is 10. The value of letter BUT = 10+2×40+2×50=19010+2×40+2×50=190 because the value of first letter B is 10, the value of T = 2 ×× 40 (T belongs to the fourth group) and the value of U = 2 ×× 450 (U belongs to the fifth group).

Considering the information given Qs. 161 to 165, find out which one or two or three of the word denoted by A, B, C correspond to the given value ?

Question 19

50
a: DAM
b: MAD
c: BAD

Solution

So the five groups of letters and the corresponding values of groups have been listed below.
Group 1 A B C D 10
Group 2 E F G H 20
Group 3 I J K L M N 30
Group 4 O P Q R S T 40
Group 5 U V W X Y Z 50

Now as per rules value of DAM is 10+10+2*30 {Since D and A belong to the same group so both have value 10, M belongs to a group 3 so its value is 2*30}
So value of DAM is 20+60 = 80
Now checking the value of MAD
M = 30, A= 2*10 D= 2*10
So the value of MAD is 30 +20 +20 = 70

Now Checking for BAD
B= 10 A= 10 D= 10
So value of BAD = 10+10+10 = 30

So we can see that for none of the three words the value is 50, So the correct answer is option 5
