Question 131

Four years ago a man was 6 times as old as his son. After 16 years he will be twice as old as his son. What is the present age of man and his son?

Let us assume the present ages of the father and son to be F and S respectively.
Four years ago the man was 6 times as old as his son: F-4 = 6(S-4) ==> 6S - F = 20.
After 16 years he will be twice as old as his son: F+16 = 2(S+16) ==> F - 2S = 16.
Adding both equations, we get 4S = 36 ==> S = 9 and F = 34.
