Each of these questions have a question followed by information given in three statements I, II and III. You have to study the question along with the information in three statements and decide that the information in which of the statement(s) is/are necessary to answer the question ?

Question 128

What is the area of the rectangular garden ?
I. Perimeter of the garden is 220 metres
II. Length and breadth of the garden are in the respective ratio of 7 : 4
III. Length is less than twice the breadth by 10 metres

Solution

To find the area of rectangular garden, we need to find the length and breadth.

I : Perimeter = 2*(l+b) = 220 => l+b = 110.

We cannot find length and breadth separately, Thus, I alone is not sufficient.

II : Ratio of length and breadth = 7:4. Length and breadth can be (7,4),(14,8),(21,12)...

We cannot find length and breadth separately, Thus, II alone is not sufficient.

III : l+10 = 2*b. We cannot find length and breadth separately, Thus, III alone is not sufficient.

I & II : Let length = 7x and breadth = 4x

=> 7x + 4x = 110 => x = 10

=> Length = 70, breadth = 40. Thus area = 70*40 = 2800

Thus, I & II are sufficient.

I & III : Solving the two equations => length = 70, breadth = 40

Area = 70*40 = 2800

Thus, I & III are sufficient.
