The sum of two numbers is 40 and the difference of these two numbers is 4. Find the ratio of these two numbers.

Solution

Given that sum of two numbers is 40 and the difference of these two numbers is 4.

Let's consider two numbers as a & b.

Therefore

=> $$ a+b=40 $$ --(1)

=> $$ a-b=4 $$ --- (2)

Adding (1) & (2), we get 2a=44 => a =22

Therefore, b =18

Hence, ratio is 22:18 i.e.., 11:9
