Question 122

The speed of two railway enginesis in the ratio 5 : 4. If they moveonparallel tracks in the same direction and if the slower engine is ahead of the faster engine by 8 km when the latter starts, then how far will the faster engine have to travel before it overtakes the slower one?

Solution

Let speed of the two engines be $$5x$$ and $$4x$$ km/hr respectively.

Relative speed when they travel in same direction = $$5x-4x=x$$ km/hr

Time taken by the faster engine to overtake slower engine = $$\frac{8}{x}$$ hours

=> Distance covered = speed $$\times$$ time

= $$\frac{8}{x}\times5x=40$$ km

=> Ans - (C)
