A,B C D and E are five consecutive odd numbers. Average of A and C is 59. What is the smallest number ?

Solution

Let the five numbers be a, a+2, a+4, a+6 and a+8.

The average of A and C is 59.
Therefore, a + a+4 = 2*59
Or 2a + 4 = 118
Therefore, a = 57

Hence, the smallest number is 57.
