What to Expect from JoSAA Round 4 2026?

JoSAA Round 4 seat allocation is scheduled for July 10, 2026 at 5 PM with online reporting up to July 13, 2026 at 5 PM. JoSAA is the official authority for joint seat allocation at 31 NITs, 23 IITs, 26 IIITs, 56 GFTIs, IISc Bengaluru and IIEST Shibpur. In total, JoSAA shall conduct 5 rounds of seat allotment in 2026. Limited but crucial movement is expected in JoSAA Round 4 2026. Popular branches such as CSE, AI, Data Science, etc are not expected to move for top IITs, NITs, or IIITs. Candidates preparing for another attempt can continue solving JEE Questions while tracking JoSAA counselling updates.  Moderate to high movement is expected in JoSAA Round 4 2026 for Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, and similar mid-preference branches at newer or mid-range NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, etc. Candidates waiting for JoSAA Round 4 2026 result must not expect a major change in high-demand branches at top IITs, NITs, IIITs, etc.

JoSAA Round 4 is an important stage for those candidates who are waiting for a seat in a better institute or a better branch. Read below to understand how the JoSAA Round 4 seat allotment works, what is the JoSAA Round 4 expected cutoff, drop in cutoffs, what to do after JoSAA Round 4 and more.

How JoSAA Round 4 Seat Allotment Works

JoSAA Round 4 seat allotment works on the previously filled in choices of a candidate. The choices are locked in a preference list and submitted by the candidate in the earlier rounds. Once the choice filling deadline has passed, the participant is not allowed to add, remove or alter their choices in the choice list. Therefore, choice filling is an important step to be done carefully as the order cannot be changed at a later stage.  JoSAA seat allotment in Round 4 is based on the candidate’s category, rank list position, order of preferences. Other factors affecting the seat allotment are availability of seats and seat quota such as HS or OS. In the JoSAA Round 4 seat allotment process, a candidate gets the highest preferred programme available from the locked choices list.  If you are planning for the next JEE session, use a structured JEE Question Bank along with counselling research. It helps revise topic-wise questions and provides structured learning.

The list of reasons for the JoSAA Round 4 seat allotment to happen are as follows:

Reason

How it Affects Round 4

Withdrawal or exit

A seat becomes vacant and moves to the next eligible candidate.

Float upgrade

A candidate moves to a higher preference, leaving the earlier seat vacant.

Slide upgrade

A candidate gets a higher branch in the same institute.

Document/query failure

Seat may be cancelled if the candidate does not respond on time.

Fee/payment failure

Seat acceptance may fail if payment and reporting are incomplete.

JoSAA Round 4 Expected Cutoff

JoSAA Round 4 expected cutoff is a trend estimate and not the official closing rank. The official JoSAA Round 4 cutoffs will be displayed on the main JoSAA website after the Round 4 seat allotment result is released. Round-wise cutoffs are available up to Round 3. For best understanding, compare Round 1, Round 2, and Round 3 closing ranks with previous-year Round 4 data.

Do not depend only on expected cutoff tables. Compare the latest closing rank with your own rank, category, quota, and preference order. If you are preparing again, you may refer to JEE Study Material to revise concepts alongside cutoff analysis.

Will CSE, ECE Cutoffs Drop in Round 4?

It is expected that the overall Round 4 cutoffs may drop depending on the institute and the branch. A practical question which students ask is ‘Will CSE, ECE Cutoffs Drop in Round 4?’. The answer is yes, CSE and ECE cutoffs may drop in JoSAA Round 4. The drop in CSE, ECE cutoffs in Round 4 is usually limited for top IITs, NITs, IIITs, etc.

CSE is expected to move the least as candidates who are allotted CSE at a top ranked IIT or NIT hardly vacate the seat unless a better CSE option is available. Comparatively, ECE may have more movement. Candidates also prefer CSE over ECE if an upgrade is available. Due to this trend, limited vacancies are created in ECE mostly at mid-level IITs and newer NITs.

Home State vs Other State Trends in Round 4

Depending on the Home State quota, CSE cutoff may move slightly at top institutes at top institutes in JoSAA Round 4 with higher movement expected across mid-ranked institutes. The Home State vs Other State trend is important for the NIT+ system and not IITs. JoSAA rules state that seats in NITs, IIEST Shibpur, and PEC Chandigarh are divided into Home State and Other State quotas.

Home State quota is for candidates whose state code of eligibility matches the state or UT where the institute is located. Other State quota includes all other states and union territories. The state code of eligibility is based on where the candidate first appeared for Class 12, not native place or residence. JoSAA Round 4 movement in Home State quota may be inconsistent.

Some NITs see better HS movement because local candidates may withdraw, upgrade, or change preference. Other State seats in popular NITs stay competitive because students from across India compete for them. Refer to the table below for details on HS vs OS state trends in Round 4.

Quota

Round 4 Behaviour

HS

May show more variation, especially in mid and lower branches

OS

Usually competitive for top NITs and popular branches

AI

Applies where HS/OS is not used & movement depends on national rank competition

Which Branches Are Most Likely to Change in Round 4?

Branches most likely to change in JoSAA Round 4 are those where candidates are more open to upgrades or withdrawals. High-demand branches stay stable because students generally hold them carefully. Students who are planning another attempt should not pause preparation fully during counselling. A JEE Main Mock Test can help them check speed, accuracy, and exam readiness. The table below highlights the branches that are most likely to change in JoSAA Round 4 2026.

Branch Type

Why Movement is More Likely

Civil, Chemical, Metallurgy, Production

Many students keep them as backup options.

Mechanical and Electrical in newer institutes

Students may shift if they get better branch-institute combinations.

Lower-ranked ECE options

Some students upgrade to CSE, AI, or Data Science.

Dual degree courses

Some students avoid longer duration if they get 4-year options.

Architecture and Planning

Separate interest area, so withdrawals can affect movement.

Newer IIIT/GFTI branches

Demand is still stabilising across institutes.

The table below shows those branches in engineering that are less likely to change significantly.

Branch Type

Why Movement is Limited

IIT CSE

Very high demand and strong retention

Top NIT CSE

High demand across India

AI, Data Science, MnC

Rising demand

Top IIT/NIT ECE

Still preferred by many high-rank students

Should You Freeze, Float, or Slide in Round 4?

The most important part of JoSAA round 4 is to know whether you should freeze, float or slide. JoSAA’s official rules define all three options clearly. Freeze means you accept the allotted seat and do not want to continue participation in further rounds. Float means you accept the seat but want a higher preference in any institute. Slide means you accept the current seat but want a higher preference within the same institute. For decision making, take help from the table below.

Option

When to Choose

Freeze

Satisfied with the institute and branch & do not want any risk or further change.

Float

Need a better institute or branch from choices placed above the current allotment.

Slide

You like the institute but want a better branch in the same institute.

What to Expect from JoSAA Round 4 2026: Conclusion

JoSAA Round 4 2026 is expected to bring limited but important changes in seat allotment. While high-demand branches like CSE, AI, Data Science and top IIT/NIT programmes may see minimal movement, branches such as Mechanical, Civil, Chemical and other mid-preference options may witness better opportunities due to withdrawals and upgrades.

Candidates should carefully analyse their allotted seat, cutoff trends, and future preferences before choosing Freeze, Float, or Slide options. Instead of depending only on expected cutoffs, students should consider their rank, category, quota and career goals to make the right admission decision during JoSAA counselling 2026.

The Round 4 results can be crucial for students waiting for upgrades or better institute-branch combinations. Staying updated with official JoSAA announcements and understanding branch-wise movement trends will help candidates make a confident choice before the final rounds of counselling.
