Suryash’s Journey to AIR 977 in JEE Advanced 2026

What does it take to secure a rank inside the top 1,000 in JEE Advanced? Is it consistency? But is it possible to be focused amid countless distractions? Today, we gathered AIR 977 in JEE Advanced: Suryash’s journey. His preparation began during Class 9 and helped him secure AIR 478 in JEE Main. However, the real challenge started while dealing with Class 11 and 12 academics and JEE 2026 preparation. He tried to give himself a break through different hobbies like gym, guitar and dance to return with more focused. A journey to IIT is not easy; you compete with 15 lakh-plus students, but before you compete with others, first you need to discipline your inner self.

How Suryash Planned His JEE Preparation

Suryash started building his JEE foundation during Class 9 under coaching guidance. He studied a few basic Class 11 chapters during Class 9, followed by Class 12 concepts during Class 10.

The goal was not to master JEE Advanced-level problems at that stage. Instead, he wanted early familiarity with concepts that could feel difficult later.

“If I knew the basics of mechanics, I was much faster at adapting in Class 11.”

This early exposure helped him enter senior secondary classes with better conceptual awareness. However, the serious academic pressure began only during Classes 11 and 12.

Suryash followed a short-term approach instead of fixing targets several months ahead. He rarely looked beyond two weeks because JEE preparation could change quickly.

Illness, travel, difficult chapters, and coaching tests could alter his weekly workload. Therefore, his schedule needed enough flexibility to absorb unexpected changes without creating extra pressure.

His method was simple: finish the required JEE Study Material before moving towards additional resources.

For the first coaching test, he focused on class material and personal JEE notes. Before the next test, he added reference books and extra practice wherever required.

This approach kept his preparation connected to upcoming tests without creating unnecessary pressure. He also tracked how long each chapter needed for proper understanding and practice.

“My plan was about the work I had to get done, not how I split my time.”

That distinction helped him remain consistent even when his schedule changed unexpectedly. Rather than treating a missed target as failure, he adjusted the next set of tasks.

His preparation also shows why flexibility can matter as much as discipline during JEE. A rigid schedule can break after one difficult week, while a flexible system can recover.

Suryash’s Daily Study Routine for JEE Preparation

Suryash’s JEE daily routine changed significantly between his foundation years and senior secondary preparation.

During Class 9, regular school ended around 3 PM, followed by outdoor time with friends. He usually returned home around 7 PM before beginning his evening study session.

His daily JEE self-study usually lasted around 2–3 hours during Class 9. This routine gave him space for academics without removing normal school-life activities.

By Classes 11 and 12, his study requirements increased considerably. Coaching lectures occupied about five hours, while self-study remained another major part of his day.

Suryash aimed for seven hours of self-study, although the actual figure usually settled around five and a half to six hours.

The important point was not hitting seven hours every single day. Instead, he maintained awareness of his workload and completed the required academic tasks.

He also placed gym sessions near the end of his day. After exercising, he only needed to revise notes and prepare for sleep.

“After the gym, I did not have much work left except revising my notes.”

This arrangement prevented physical fatigue from affecting difficult academic tasks earlier in the day. It also helped him sleep better and recover before starting again.

His routine included activities beyond academics, including gym sessions and playing guitar. He also experimented with learning dance, although he eventually stopped because the commitment felt difficult.

These activities gave his mind a break from continuous JEE-focused work. Moreover, regular breaks can help you return to difficult chapters with better concentration.

At the end of the conversation, Bhanu Sethnia spoke with Suryash about his JEE journey, preparation habits, setbacks, and lessons.

How Suryash Managed Backlogs During JEE Preparation

Backlogs were not unusual during Suryash’s preparation, especially after difficult weeks. However, he avoided one mistake that could create an even bigger academic gap.

He strongly advised against using all-nighters to finish pending chapters. Losing sleep could affect concentration during the next day’s classes.

“You are not clearing the backlog; you are replacing the backlog.”

Instead, Suryash waited for lighter topics in his regular coaching schedule. He then used that extra time to recover unfinished concepts without disturbing current lessons.

For example, he struggled with a few concepts in Ray Optics during Class 12. Meanwhile, Electromagnetic Waves required comparatively less time and practice.

He used those lighter study days to work through his Ray Optics weaknesses. This helped him strengthen the difficult chapter without sacrificing his current classroom progress.

The key lesson is simple: a backlog needs recovery time rather than emergency treatment.

If you sacrifice the next day’s learning for yesterday’s unfinished work, another gap appears. Therefore, checking your weekly workload can help you find suitable recovery slots.

Suryash’s Question-Solving and Revision Strategy for JEE

Suryash changed his approach to questions after scoring only 46 out of 180 in a Physics test.

That test exposed a problem deeper than weak concepts. He realised that he was solving questions without giving them complete attention.

After solving a problem, he started reviewing the exact thought process behind his answer. This helped him understand why a particular method worked.

“It is not about doing 1,000 questions; you must remember what you solved.”

His question-solving method eventually became a three-step process. First, he solved the problem with complete focus and patience.

Second, he checked what helped him identify the correct approach. Third, he examined the calculations and searched for faster methods.

This method also improved his speed during JEE Advanced. He noticed that certain calculations could be shortened through better algebraic manipulation.

He did not immediately search for solutions after getting stuck. Instead, he attempted difficult questions around four or five times.

“If you are stuck for four or five tries, that question becomes personal.”

Only after repeated attempts would he approach his teachers or check another solution. This made the eventual learning more memorable.

Key Points on Suryansh’s Revision for JEE

  • For revision, he relied heavily on repetition rather than passive reading. A question from JEE Mock Tests or topic-wise MCQs that had once caused difficulty became easier after repeated attempts.
  • He also developed the habit of reading questions aloud while solving them. This helped him stay engaged instead of mechanically moving from one problem to another.
  • His process was not simply solve, check, and move ahead. He solved, understood the trigger, reviewed the method, and then moved forward.
  • This approach built stronger recall while also improving calculation speed across Physics and Mathematics.

Books Suryash Followed for JEE Mains and Advanced

Suryash considered his JEE study material the most important resource throughout his preparation.

He completed the JEE PYQs, coaching books and worksheets before moving towards additional reference books. This prevented excessive resources from becoming another source of unfinished work.

His additional books varied across Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. He selected resources according to his requirements instead of attempting every available book.

In Chemistry, he focused heavily on organic and inorganic practice. His coaching worksheets were sufficient for Physical Chemistry, so he did not add another major book.

Mathematics received the largest share of his study time because it was his favourite subject. He also secured 100 percentile in Mathematics during his second JEE Main attempt.

Physics

Bhanu Sthnia asked how his JEE Advanced Chemistry performance was comparatively weaker. Because most JEE aspirants say chemistry is the score booster.

But Suryash mentioned that,

“It depends on the day and the test; it is very subjective.”

Therefore, you should avoid deciding that a subject is permanently weak based on a few test scores.

Suryash’s Advice for JEE 2027 and 2028 Aspirants

Suryash’s final advice focused on three qualities: consistency, rest, and confidence.

He believes daily effort matters, but continuous studying without recovery can eventually cause burnout. If your concentration remains poor for several days, taking proper rest can help.

You do not need to feel guilty about taking a short break when your mind genuinely needs recovery. The important part is returning to your routine after the break.

“You do not need anyone’s permission to take rest. Take rest, recover, and get back.”

His final point was confidence, which he connected directly with repetition. Confidence does not appear before practice; it develops because of repeated practice.

If you have solved a concept repeatedly, you gain evidence that you can handle it again. That evidence gradually replaces fear with familiarity.

Suryash also encouraged you to accept mistakes during classroom learning. Getting a question wrong does not mean you cannot crack JEE Advanced.

Instead, mistakes can show exactly where your understanding needs more work. You need enough Awareness to identify those gaps without allowing comparison to damage your confidence.

His preparation also involved sacrifices. He reduced hobbies that required long hours, including coding, because they competed with his JEE preparation time.

At the same time, he retained activities such as gym sessions and guitar because they helped him manage fatigue. This balance helped him continue working through an intense two-year preparation period.
