JEE Main 2027 Eligibility for Droppers, Documents Required

JEE Main 2027 Eligibility for Droppers

If you have one or two drop years after class 12th completion, you are completely eligible to write JEE Main. However, if you passed 12th Class before 2024, then you are not eligible for JEE Mains. There is also no upper age limit for appearing in JEE Main 2027. Moreover, admission to NITs, IIITs and other participating institutes can have separate requirements.

Can Droppers Appear for JEE Main 2027?

Yes, droppers can appear for JEE Main 2027 if they meet the qualifying examination criteria. A candidate who completed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026 can appear, while a candidate appearing for Class 12 in 2027 can also apply.

Taking a drop after Class 12 does not create a separate eligibility category. The important point is the candidate's Class 12 passing or appearing year.

For example:

  • If a candidate passed Class 12 in 2026 and took a drop for JEE preparation in 2027: Eligible to appear for JEE Main 2027.
  • A candidate passed Class 12 in 2025 and is taking a second preparation year: Eligible to appear for JEE Main 2027.
  • A candidate who passed Class 12 in 2024: Not eligible for JEE Main 2027 under the stated qualifying-year condition.

Candidates should also remember that eligibility to appear for JEE Main and eligibility for admission are not exactly the same. NTA conducts JEE Main for B.E./B.Tech, B.Arch and B.Planning admissions, while participating institutes can prescribe additional admission conditions.

How Many Attempts Are Allowed in JEE Main 2027?

JEE Main 2027 is being conducted in two sessions. An eligible candidate can appear in Session 1, Session 2, or both sessions as permitted under the application rules.

If a candidate appears in both sessions, the best NTA Score is considered for the relevant purpose.

For example, suppose a 2026 Class 12 pass-out appears in both sessions:

Session

NTA Score

Session 1

94.80

Session 2

97.25

Score considered

97.25

The candidate does not lose the better Session 2 performance because the two-session structure allows the better NTA Score to be considered.

For droppers, therefore, appearing in both sessions can provide another opportunity to improve performance without making the earlier score the final score.

Along with that, JEE aspirants must check the following and, if previously given, note this.

Exam

Total Attempts Allowed

Timeline / Window

JEE Main

6 attempts (twice a year)

Across 3 consecutive years starting from the year of passing Class 12.

JEE Advanced

2 attempts (once a year)

Across 2 consecutive years starting from the year of passing Class 12.

Is There an Age Limit for JEE Main 2027 Droppers?

No, JEE Main 2027 does not mention an upper age limit for appearing in the examination.

This is particularly relevant for droppers who are concerned that taking one or more preparation years will make them too old to sit for the examination.

However, the absence of an age limit for appearing should not be interpreted as a guarantee of admission to every participating institute. Institute-level admission conditions can be different from NTA's examination eligibility rules.

A candidate should therefore check the admission criteria applicable to the institute and programme they want to join after qualifying through JEE Main.

Example: How the age rule works

Suppose a candidate completed Class 12 in 2026 and will be 19 years old during JEE Main 2027. The candidate can apply if all other eligibility conditions are satisfied.

Similarly, a candidate who is older but falls within the permitted Class 12 passing-year window is not disqualified merely because of age.

The practical check is therefore:

Class 12 eligibility → JEE Main eligibility → institute-specific admission eligibility

Keeping these three checks separate helps avoid confusion during registration and counselling.
